ABSTRACT
The objective of this research was to determine the plumness value (Biometry) is appropriate for male mud crab cultivation (S. serrata) toward the molting for male soft shell crabs production in the pond. The result of the study were expected to become the latest guidelines and information materials for soft shell crabs farmers about the plumness value (Biometry) is appropriate for the production of hig quality and profitable soft shell crabs. The research was conducted for 2 months started from August to september 2011 held at the people’s pond of poasia District in Kendari city Southeast Sulawesi Province. The plumness value (Biometry) data of this research were analyzed descriptively by comparing the ratio of initial carapace size and initial weight of test animals. The result of the research showed that the plumness value (Biometry) or the ratio of carapace size and mud crab weight (S. serrata) at intervals of 60-160 g did not affect the condition of perfect molting, defects molting and crabs mortality, which means that there were another factors that affect these three condition, and plumness value (Biometry) of appropriate male mud crab (S. serrata) for male soft shell crab productions was a measure of weight at intervals of 60-99 g and 100-129 g, therefore the plumness value have the big affect toward the molting period of the test animals, where the fastest daily molting period of 18-20 days at intervals of 60-99 g and 100-129 g.

Key words : Plumness Value (Biometry), Molting, and Male Mud Crab   (Scylla  serrata)
